Lost a full set of dividers and triangles when my drafting table chair broke underneath me

I was working on a floor plan for a client in Memphis and the weld on my old chair snapped, sending me and my tools everywhere, cost me about $85 to replace the gear because the triangles cracked on the concrete floor, has anyone else had a cheap chair ruin their equipment?

That $85 hit stings, I feel your pain. My old chair from Staples gave out last year while I was reaching for a pencil, and I ended up flat on my back like a turtle on its shell. The worst part was my cat watching me the whole time, probably thinking "finally, he's at my level." I had to replace a protractor and a T-square after that fall, and the chair cost me less than the equipment it destroyed. Lesson learned though, now I test every chair I sit in by rocking back and forth like a maniac before I buy it.

Wait, was your Staples one of those mesh back ones with the gas cylinder that always starts wobbling after a few months? I used to think people were overreacting about cheap chairs, like just sit down and do your work you know? But hearing about your gear getting wrecked and that whole turtle on your back image kind of changes my mind. Maybe it's just me but I always figured a chair is a chair until something expensive hits the floor.

Man I read somewhere that cheap office chairs are basically a false economy especially if you do any kind of detail work where you need to stay still. That weld snapping sounds like a nightmare, concrete floors just destroy anything plastic that hits them too. Hope you found a sturdier replacement chair for the next set of drawings.
