Just realized my drawings went from sloppy to clean in about 3 months after switching to a 0.5mm lead holder

I started using a 0.5mm lead holder back in June and my line work got way more precise, but my shading turned out stiffer and took longer. Did switching tools actually improve your drafting, or did you just need to slow down and practice more?

Exactly this. I switched to a 0.5mm and my linework got crisp but my shading became super tight and mechanical. What helped me was keeping the 0.5mm for outlines and details, then switching back to a 0.7mm or even a 2.0mm clutch pencil for the looser shading parts. Now I treat it like having different brushes, not one perfect tool. The 0.5mm trains you to be deliberate, but you gotta let yourself be messy somewhere too.

You mentioned your shading got stiffer and took longer after switching to the 0.5mm. That's interesting because I noticed the exact opposite when I tried a thicker lead holder. Did you find yourself overthinking the pressure control on the finer tip, or did the lead just feel too fragile to get that loose shading you were used to?

Oh man, totally same here! The 0.5mm made me way too tense and careful.
