I swear switching from paper to CAD changed my whole career in 6 months

I used to draft everything by hand for 8 years straight. Thought I was fast, thought I knew my stuff. Then I took a temp gig at a shop in Portland that used nothing but AutoCAD and it felt like I was learning to walk again. After about 3 weeks of constant mistakes and redoing lines, something clicked. My redlines dropped from like a dozen per sheet to maybe two or three. By the 6 month mark I was pumping out drawings twice as fast as my old paper pace. The real kicker was a senior drafter I worked with who told me 'your hand is steady but your mind was slow' right to my face. That stuck with me. Has anyone else made a late switch like that and noticed a huge jump in speed after the initial struggle?

After 15 years in this field I actually saw the opposite happen. A buddy of mine in Seattle went back to hand drafting after 4 years of CAD because he found the digital workflow made him rush and miss clearances. His redlines actually went up before they went down. The real hidden benefit nobody talks about is spatial reasoning - CAD actually rewires your brain to think in 3D sections automatically after a while. That mental shift is what made your speed jump, not just the software being faster.
