Hot take: The way we mark out studs has gotten way too complicated

Last Tuesday I was on a job framing out a basement in an old building near downtown. This younger guy comes over, fresh out of trade school, and he's got a fancy digital stud finder and a laser setup that cost him over 150 bucks. He spent a good 10 minutes calibrating it and checking the walls. I walked over with my old Neodymium magnet on a string, found every single stud in about 30 seconds flat. He looked at my setup and just said, 'That thing still works?' I told him I've been using the same magnet for 8 years and it never needs batteries. Has anyone else noticed a lot of new drafters and framers overcomplicating the basics? What's the simplest tool you still use every day?

Did you see his face when that magnet hit the first stud? Priceless.

Your magnet trick only works on steel studs or drywall with metal backing.
