That moment I realized my fence was leaning because of one post

I was painting the back fence 2 months ago and noticed the whole section leaned left about 4 inches. Tracked it down to a single post where the concrete had cracked and the wood had rotted at ground level. Dug it out, replaced the post with a treated 4x4, and used quick-set concrete this time. Took me a whole Saturday but the fence is straight now. Anyone else had a fence post go bad on them after a wet season?

Did your buddy use enough gravel at the bottom for drainage?

Wait, are you saying gravel at the bottom actually doesn't stop rot? I used to swear by a thick layer of gravel in all my pots, thought it was the only way to keep roots from drowning. But after seeing my buddy's garden last summer, I'm starting to change my mind. He skipped the gravel entirely on a big wooden planter, just drilled extra holes and added rough sand to the soil mix. A year later, his plants look way healthier than mine ever did, no rot at all. Makes me wonder if gravel just creates a water pocket that traps moisture against the wood at the bottom. Might have to try his method next season and see if I'm wrong about the whole thing.

Gravel helps, but that rot started from soil contact, not puddling.
