Stop using spackle for nail holes in trim

I keep seeing people fill nail holes in baseboards with regular spackle and it cracks every time. Use wood filler instead, it flexes with the wood and doesn't fall out after a season of weather changes. Has anyone else had to redo trim work because of this?

You say it cracks every time and I've seen the same thing. But there is another problem nobody talks about. Spackle soaks up paint differently than wood filler does, so you end up with these dull spots on your trim that flash under the light no matter how many coats you put on. Wood filler sands smooth and takes paint evenly, so your finish looks like one solid piece instead of a patch job. That alone made me switch years ago.

Didn't your buddy Mark learn this lesson the hard way on his last trim job?

Right? Poor Mark spent a whole weekend redoing his living room trim because of that same issue. Stuff like that is so frustrating.
