Redoing my deck led to a heated chat with my dad about sealants
I was staining my wood deck last month and my dad dropped by. He swears by oil-based sealant for longevity, but I used water-based for easier cleanup. We got into this funny back-and-forth that felt like a DIY showdown, lol. So, which type do you think is better for outdoor projects?

Honestly, the cleanup part is the least of your worries outside. Your dad has a point about oil holding up longer, especially if your deck gets a lot of sun or foot traffic. Water based might be easier to put on, but won't you just have to redo it way sooner? That's more work in the long run.

People act like redoing a deck every few years is some huge chore. It's a weekend project at most. My neighbor used water based five years ago and it still looks fine. The sun here is brutal too. Maybe if you're hosting pool parties every day it matters, but for normal use it's not worth the mess of oil.

More work in the long run is your take? Ngl, I'll take the easier job now every time. Future me can deal with it.
