My friend in Medellin said to always book a month, never a week

I did a week in Lisbon and spent half my time looking for the next place. Has anyone found a good middle ground for testing a new city?

Used to book two weeks thinking it was perfect. Got stuck in a terrible apartment in Mexico City for the whole second week, which really sucked. Now I do a refundable week somewhere central, then extend if I like it or move to a better neighborhood.
