My buddy in Chiang Mai swore I didn't need travel insurance. Big mistake.

So I met this guy Dave at a coworking space in Chiang Mai, right? He told me travel insurance was a total scam for digital nomads, said just save the money instead. Well, three months later my laptop got stolen from a cafe in Bali, and replacing it cost me $1,200 out of pocket. Plus I had to deal with a nasty ear infection that set me back another $300 for a clinic visit. Now I'm wondering, has anyone else gotten burned by taking bad advice from other nomads overseas?

Did Dave ever say what he'd do if something serious happened, like a motorbike accident or getting really sick? Seems like he was only thinking about the cheap stuff.

Honestly @alexc93, I was kind of on board with Dave's whole cheap setup thing at first... but you're right, he never really talked about the big stuff. It's crazy how you can get so focused on saving a few dollars that you forget what actually matters when things go wrong. Made me totally rethink my own approach after reading that.
