I keep seeing digital nomads brag about working from beaches but never mention the Wi-Fi issues

Spent three months in Bali last year and learned the hard way that a cafe with a "fast internet" sign usually means 5 Mbps on a good day. How do you guys actually test connection speeds before committing to a spot?

Oh man, the Bali Wi-Fi struggle is real. I finally started carrying a portable speed tester in my bag, just a cheap little USB-C gadget that plugs into my laptop. Before I even sit down, I run a quick test on my phone using the Speedtest app, and I look for at least 20 Mbps download and under 50 ms ping for video calls. If the place feels open and I can grab a power outlet near the router, I'll also ask the staff what their actual speeds are during busy hours. Saved me so many headache days once I got into that habit.

That "ask the staff what their actual speeds are during busy hours" tip is the real secret nobody talks about. Most places will tell you their peak hour speeds drop by half or more, and that's saved me from sitting down in a dead zone right at noon. I also started checking if there's a mesh network or just one router in the back, because a single router through thick walls is basically useless after 3pm.
