That frozen injector cup in Toledo taught me a lesson about patience

Last month I had a 2015 Freightliner with a stuck injector cup in Toledo, Ohio. I fought it for two days with heat and a slide hammer, then a retired guy named Joe walked over and said to let it cool completely and tap it sideways with a brass drift. It popped right out after that, and I felt silly for rushing it. Anyone else got a stubborn injector trick that took them years to learn?

Ever tried letting penetrating oil sit overnight instead of going at it right away? I had a similar cup fight on a Detroit series 60 and spent half a day cussing it out. Finally walked away, came back the next morning with a cold block and a sharp rap on the side. Came out like it was never stuck. Seems like the metal needs to shrink and relax just a little, not get hotter and angrier. Now I always give it at least a few hours to cool down before I even think about tapping it.

Honestly I used to be the opposite, I thought heat was the answer for everything and would torch the hell out of any stuck part. Idk why but I figured more heat meant more expansion and that had to help, but it just made things worse every time. Your cold block and waiting thing actually makes a ton of sense when you put it that way, like the metal contracts just enough to break the grip. I never really thought about the shrink and relax part before, I always just got more frustrated and attacked it harder. Gonna try the overnight soak and a walk away next time instead of beating on it for hours, cause I've definitely wasted entire days on cup pullers and bearing races. Maybe it's just me but I always hated admitting I had to walk away, but I can see how that's the real trick here.
