Talked to an old Cat mechanic, changed my mind about electronic engines
I was always one of those guys who swore the 3406E was the last good motor and anything with a computer was just a headache waiting to happen. Then last week I was helping a buddy swap a fuel pump in his shop outside of Nashville, and this retired guy who used to work at the local Cat dealer came by to shoot the breeze. He told me he used to hate electronics too, but he saw a 2018 engine with 850,000 miles on it come in for a simple sensor fix, and that was it for him. He said the old mechanical stuff is simpler, sure, but the new ones tell you what's wrong instead of making you chase a ghost for three days. Anyone else had a similar moment where you flipped on something you were dead set against?

That 3406E fanboy in me still remembers a 2015 engine with 700k that needed a whole wiring harness and a $4k computer, while my old 3176 just needed a $40 o-ring and a weekend. Yeah, it tells you what's wrong, but good luck getting parts or finding a guy who can actually read that code without a dealer laptop.
