Showerthought: Are new engines really more reliable than the old mechanical diesels?

I've been wrenching for about 15 years now, and I swear I see more 1990s 12-valve trucks still running strong at 400k miles than I do newer common rail trucks hitting 150k without injector or pump issues. Is the complexity worth the fuel economy gains, or did we lose something in the trade-off?

Bought a 1997 12-valve sight unseen from a farmer a few years back with 380k on it, thing fires up on the first crank no matter how cold it gets. Buddy's 2015 Duramax has been in the shop three times this year for emissions crap and injector issues.

300k is usually the golden number for a rebuild, so hearing about 380k and still going strong is wild. @miles72 I guess some of those old 12-valves just laugh at normal wear and tear. That farmer knew what he had.

Wait, your 12-valves are actually hitting 400k without a rebuild?
