Remember when you could actually see the whole engine bay?

I was working on a 2005 Duramax in a shop in Phoenix, and my boss told me to check the EGR cooler. I had to take off the whole intake manifold just to get a wrench on one bolt, which took like three hours. How do you guys even work on these new trucks without pulling the cab off first?

Oh, pulling the cab is just the warm-up act now. I swear on some of these newer diesels, they design them assuming the tech is a double-jointed contortionist with toddler-sized hands. Three hours for one bolt sounds about right.

The 2023 Duramax service manual actually shows a clear path to that rear turbo clamp now. They added an access panel behind the wheel well. It's still tight, but I got it done in forty minutes last Tuesday. Some of the new designs are frustrating, but a few engineers are finally listening to the guys on the lift.

Man, you're not kidding. I had a 2020 Powerstroke on the lift last week where the service manual literally said to drop the entire transmission just to replace a $15 sensor. The book time was eight hours! It's like they're actively trying to make simple jobs impossible.
