Just realized most shop air compressors waste like 30% of their energy
I was reading through some DOE reports last night for a side project and stumbled on a stat that blew my mind. Apparently the average diesel shop's air compressor system leaks about 25-30% of its output through fittings and hoses. That's like running your compressor full bore for 8 hours a day when you only need 5.5 hours of actual work. I checked our shop's old 80 gallon Ingersoll Rand over the weekend with a soapy water spray and found 3 tiny leaks in the couplers alone. Has anyone else actually measured how much they're losing to leaks or am I the only one who got curious about this?

Isn't it wild how we just accept that kind of waste without thinking about it? Like, we'd never put up with a gas can that leaks 30% of what we pump into it, but with air tools we just assume hissing fittings are normal. It's the same mindset that lets people deal with a slow drip from a faucet for months until it becomes a real problem, lol.

Started replacing all my quick connects with the brass high-flow ones a couple years back. @williams.kim you're dead right about that gas can analogy, I used to just put up with the hissing until I timed how long it took to fill a tire versus after I swapped the fittings. Took maybe an afternoon and twenty bucks to change out every coupler in the shop, now my compressor actually kicks on half as often as it used to.
