Ignore the 'premium' oil additive hype, found out the hard way in Tulsa

Local parts guy talked me into a slick marketing oil additive last fall, swore it'd fix my 6.7 knock. Dropped 80 bucks on it, ran it 200 miles, and the knock got worse. Pulled the oil pan and found sludge chunks. Turns out that stuff just suspends crap instead of cleaning it. My old buddy runs a fleet shop and laughed, said just use the cheap full synthetic and change it on schedule. Has anyone else had a snake oil product make things worse before you got real evidence?
