I finally listened to that old timer about injector timing
I used to always set injection timing by the book, dead on the spec. Then this guy Bill from a shop in Bakersfield told me to retard it 2 degrees for heavy towing in the heat. Tried it on a 1994 Cummins 12 valve last month and the EGTs dropped by almost 150 degrees. Anyone else run timing different than factory for specific loads?

That Bill fella might be onto something honestly. What were your EGTs reading before and after? I gotta wonder if you noticed any change in the spool up time or low end grunt pulling a load up a grade. Retarding timing usually kills some bottom end torque (which matters for a daily driver but less for a dedicated tow rig). Did you have to bump the fuel screw a hair to make up for it? I'm curious if the tradeoff is worth it for the heat reduction if you're not constantly hammering on it in the desert.

Yeah @daniel_lane30 you nailed it. Low end grunt took a slight hit, but bumping the fuel screw half a turn brought it back fine.

Throwing a little more fuel at it is probably the easiest bandaid fix.
