Had a turbo let go on a 6.7 Powerstroke outside Flagstaff

I was hauling a load of hay up I-17 near mile marker 320 when I heard this grinding noise and lost all power. Pulled over fast and saw oil spraying from the passenger side turbo. Had to limp it 15 miles to a shop in Flagstaff where I found the unison ring was seized and the vanes were all cracked. Took me 8 hours to swap both turbos because the bolts were rusted to hell from all the road salt. Has anyone else dealt with those unison rings sticking on the later 6.7s?

7.3 powerstrokes had their issues but at least the turbos were simple... my 2015 6.7 dropped a unison ring at 80k miles and it was a nightmare finding the parts. Ended up replacing the whole turbo pedestal because the bolts snapped off in the block from corrosion. Flagstaff shop charged me 1800 for just the labor on top of the parts.

@king.wyatt man that's brutal. It's funny how these newer trucks are supposed to be more reliable but then you've got little plastic pieces like unison rings failing and turning a simple job into a full block surgery. Seems like everything from trucks to household appliances is designed to be borderline unrepairable now. My buddy's washing machine died last year over a little circuit board that cost almost as much as a whole new machine. We're paying for convenience but getting trapped instead.

Oh man, that washing machine story hits close to home. I was just reading an article about how appliance manufacturers are making control boards that are basically glued shut with epoxy so you can't even repair a blown capacitor. It's like they want you to throw the whole thing away. And the truck stuff too, I saw a video where a guy had to cut his entire turbo pedestal apart with a sawzall because Ford used different bolts that seize up instantly. I mean, is it really that hard to use stainless steel hardware on something that costs eighty grand? Idk, maybe it's just me but it feels like we're getting squeezed from both sides with planned obsolescence and repair costs.
