Why does nobody talk about how deleted scenes can ruin a movie's pacing?
I watched the extended cut of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers last week and those extra 15 minutes of Merry and Pippin scenes just killed the flow for me. On the flip side, the deleted scene where Boromir teaches the hobbits sword fighting actually made his death hit harder. Which side do you fall on - do deleted scenes fix gaps or just slow things down?

Oh man, the Two Towers extended cut is exactly what I think of too. I watched it for the first time last month and those extra farm scenes with Treebeard felt like they dragged on forever. But that Boromir scene you mentioned is a perfect example of why deleted scenes can be good when done right. I had the same thing happen with the Harry Potter movies where the deleted scene with the Gaunts in the Half Blood Prince gave so much backstory that the movie actually made sense after. It's like directors need to choose between filling plot holes or keeping the momentum going, and sometimes they just pick wrong. Maybe it's just me but I'd rather have a slightly slower movie that explains everything than one that rushes through the important stuff.
