Rant: I watched 47 deleted scenes in one weekend and only 4 were worth it
Okay so last Saturday I got stuck home with a cold and decided to do a full deleted scene marathon on my laptop. I pulled up every bonus feature I could find on the streaming apps, mostly stuff from older movies and a few shows, and I counted them as I went. 47 scenes total. You know how many actually added to the story? Four. Maybe five if I'm being nice. The rest were either the director just letting the camera roll too long or a joke that clearly died in a test screening, and you can feel why they cut it. One scene from a heist movie was literally 9 minutes of two guys walking through a parking garage with no talking, and the caption said "establishes tone." Tone of what? I skipped ahead twice. The worst part is people online act like every deleted scene is a lost masterpiece, but most of them got cut for a reason, and it's not always the studio being evil. I'll die on this hill: a good deleted scene should make you feel like you missed something real, not like you're digging through someone's leftovers. What's the actual best cut scene you've ever watched where you were mad they took it out? I need real answers because I'm not sitting through 40 more duds next time.
What makes you so sure the 4 good ones actually needed to stay in the movie? A lot of scenes feel great on their own but kill the pace when you put them back in, so the fact it hit you hard doesn't mean the cut was a mistake. Name the 4 you liked and tell me one of them, because I want to know if you're judging them as standalone clips or as part of the actual film. If a scene made you feel something but the movie is better without it, then it's not a lost masterpiece, it's just a good scene in the wrong place.
