Spent $95 on a turkey fryer kit and my bird came out raw in the middle with a burnt shell
Two Thanksgivings ago I bought one of those big propane turkey fryer kits for $95 at a hardware store in Reno because my brother in law would not shut up about how good fried turkey is. I thawed a 14 pound bird for 3 days like the box said, heated the oil to 350, and dropped it in for the recommended 3 and a half minutes per pound. Pulled it out after 49 minutes looking like a blackened meteor, all proud of myself. Cut into it at the table and the middle was straight up pink and cold while the outside was rock hard and tasted like straight propane. My whole family sat there watching me carve this disaster while my brother in law just kept saying he had never seen one do that before. The oil alone cost me $30 and I had to dump the whole pot the next morning. If you are thinking about frying a turkey to save oven space, just spatchcock it and roast it, trust me. Did anyone else here actually have a fried turkey turn out good or is that whole thing a scam?
