PSA: My $15 splatter screen saved my kitchen from a grease fire disaster

I was frying up some chicken wings last Tuesday and put the lid on the pot to keep the oil from popping everywhere. Big mistake. The steam built up and the lid basically launched off, sending hot oil all over my stove. My buddy Rick told me later he always uses a mesh splatter screen instead of a lid. He said it lets steam escape but still blocks the grease. I grabbed a basic 12-inch one from Target for $15 and tried it again yesterday. No explosions, no mess, and the chicken came out way crispier since moisture wasn't trapped. Has anyone else almost burned their place down covering a deep fry pot with a normal lid?

For real, who knew covering a grease fire was basically asking your kitchen to self-destruct? My mom always told me to use a lid on grease fires, but I guess she forgot to mention the whole "exploding volcano of oil" part. Glad you found the splatter screen before the fire department did.

@the_joel Bet your mom forgot to mention that part while she was busy saving the casserole. Covering a grease fire is like playing kitchen roulette with extra regret and a side of third-degree burns. That splatter screen probably saved you a whole lot of explaining to the fire department and maybe a ceiling replacement too. Next time maybe just grab a fire extinguisher and let the curtains burn, right?
