My second batch of onion rings ended up inside the fryer basket

Tbh I thought I was being smart by keeping the basket in while dropping the rings. First batch came out perfect. Second batch I dumped them in and they all slid right through the slots and sank to the bottom. Oil got murky fast. Had to fish out soggy onion pieces with tongs for like 10 minutes. Is there a trick to keeping stuff from falling through or do I just need to lift the basket out every time?

Heard someone say you gotta treat the basket like it's not even there when you're doing batter coated stuff. The coating kinda glues the rings to the wire so they don't slide around, but if they're just tossed in dry or with a thin batter, they'll slip through every time. I'd pull the basket out, lay the rings flat in the oil, then lower the basket down on top of them to hold them under. Works way better than dropping them into the basket first. Also helps keep the oil cleaner since they're not sinking into the bottom where all the burnt bits collect. Maybe give that a shot next time, it made a big difference for me.

Learned that lesson the hard way too, now I always pull the basket out first.
