My dad told me I was ruining my oil by not filtering between batches

I used to just dump hot oil through a strainer into a container and call it good. Then my dad watched me do it last Thanksgiving and pointed out all the little burnt bits still floating around. He showed me how to filter it through a couple layers of cheesecloth while it's still warm (not hot) and man, the difference is night and day. Food tastes cleaner and the oil doesn't go dark after one use. Anyone else have a family member call them out on a bad habit like that?

Yeah @josephbutler, your father in law probably starts the lawnmower on the first pull too.

My father in law once watched me sharpen a lawnmower blade with a file and just shook his head the whole time. He pulled out this old sharpening stone he's had since the 70s and showed me how to do it right, all about the angle and not taking off too much metal at once. Now I can't even go near a blade without checking the balance after. Funny how the old timers have their ways and we just figure we're doing fine until they set us straight.
