Last weekend I flooded my whole kitchen with oil
I got one of those countertop deep fryers from a yard sale for like 15 bucks. Figured it would be fine for some chicken wings last Saturday. I filled it up to the max line but didn't realize the wings had ice crystals still on em. The oil erupted like a volcano and went everywhere across my stove and floor. My cat ran out of the room and I spent 3 hours cleaning grease off the cabinets. Has anyone else had a fryer go ballistic like that or was I just asking for it?

Yeah but I've got to push back a little on something William.kim said about water and oil hating each other. Technically speaking, it's not that they "hate" each other, it's more like water has a much lower boiling point than oil and when it hits that hot oil it instantly turns to steam and expands. That expansion is what throws the oil everywhere. So those ice crystals were definitely the problem, you're right about that. But it's physics, not feelings. The max line is also a trap on those cheap fryers because even without ice, food dropped in can cause it to bubble up past the rim. You really only want to fill them to about halfway to be safe. Anyway, I feel your pain on the cleanup - that greasy film gets everywhere.

Oil erupted like a volcano" is a great way to put it, because that's basically what you did. Water and hot oil hate each other, so those ice crystals were basically tiny bombs waiting to go off. Sounds like your cat has more survival instincts than anyone in that kitchen, honestly.
