Burnt my hand because I didn't know you had to dry the food first
Spent 6 months throwing wet onion rings into hot oil and wondering why it exploded everywhere, then my buddy asked why I wasn't patting them dry first. Anyone else figure out the simple stuff way later than you should have?

My dad worked construction for 30 years and the one thing he drilled into me was that water and hot oil do not mix at all. He used to say a single drop of water in hot asphalt can send a bubble of it flying right into your face. I bet half the people who burn themselves with cooking oil never had someone show them the basic safety stuff like drying food first.

Oh man that is exactly the kind of thing I did with popcorn kernels. For like two years I was making popcorn on the stove and half the kernels wouldn't pop. I thought I was just buying bad popcorn. Turns out I was supposed to let the oil get hot first before throwing them in. I was just dumping cold oil and kernels in a pan and turning on the heat. My roommate finally saw me doing it and just stared at me like I had three heads. Also learned the hard way that putting frozen chicken straight into a hot pan is basically asking for a grease fire. We all have those kitchen moments where we just completely miss the obvious.
