Still seeing people reuse passwords across sites like it's 2005

A buddy of mine got his Instagram hacked last month because he used the same password from a sketchy forum account that got leaked. Has anyone here ever actually had a password manager save them from something obvious like that?

Wait @fiona_young you seriously rotate only 3 passwords EVERYWHERE?

Gonna disagree a bit here. I rotate maybe 3 passwords across everything and have never had an issue, not once. The whole password manager thing feels like overkill when you just use long phrases and avoid basic stuff like your dog's name. If a site gets hacked, yeah they might get my login, but I'm not putting my bank info in some random forum anyway.

Man, that's exactly what my buddy thought until he got wrecked by it. He used the same three passwords for years, thought he was being smart with long phrases. Then some random gaming forum he'd signed up for in like 2014 got breached. They got his password, tried it on his email, and suddenly his whole Steam account was gone and someone was buying crypto with his PayPal... he had to spend like a week sorting out chargebacks and changing everything. I guess the point is it doesn't matter if it's a sketchy site or not, if you reuse those passwords somewhere important, that's the risk.
