Why does every custom build have a giant island with no clear path around it?

I walked through a $1.2 million custom home last week near Boise and the kitchen island had maybe 30 inches of clearance on one side... the owner couldn't even open the dishwasher without bumping their hip. I keep seeing these massive islands in expensive builds that look great on paper but totally kill the flow of the room. Has anyone else run into this where the architect or designer just adds a huge island without thinking about how people actually move through the space?

Used to think big islands were just a rich people flex until I helped a buddy move his fridge and realized his giant island literally trapped us in the kitchen. Totally changed my mind on sacrificing flow for looks.

Guess my tiny kitchen island isn't so bad after all.
