Was super skeptical about insulation foam versus fiberglass... until my energy bill arrived

I built my own house outside of Eugene last year and fought with my contractor for weeks about using spray foam insulation instead of fiberglass batts. I thought it was just a gimmick to upsell me, you know? But after the first winter my heating bill averaged $68 a month compared to my buddy's similar sized house with fiberglass that hit $190. The foam seals up every little crack around windows and outlets that fiberglass just leaves gaps in. So yeah I was totally wrong about it being a waste of money. Has anyone else had builder push you toward something pricey that actually paid off in the long run?

Oh man @anderson.david you're bringing up a good point. Yeah my guy pushed rigid foam board for the foundation too and I was like "dude why can't I just use the regular pink stuff?" But he explained how moisture wicks up through concrete and the foam acts as a thermal break so your slab doesn't just suck all the heat out of the house. I did it and my basement floor never gets that cold damp feeling in the winter. Funny how the expensive stuff usually ends up being the right call even when it hurts your wallet upfront.

Did your contractor also push that rigid foam board for the foundation?
