Spent $8,000 on a fancy HVAC system and regretted it

I built my house outside Austin last year and paid a premium for a top-of-the-line geothermal HVAC setup. The installer sold me on huge energy savings, but after 15 months my electric bill barely dropped $20 a month. The system itself has been a nightmare to maintain, with two breakdowns already that cost me $1,200 in repairs. Anyone else get burned by an overhyped home comfort system?

And honestly, the kicker is that $20 a month savings means it'll take like 30 years just to break even on the install cost (assuming nothing else breaks in the meantime). I've heard geothermal can be great if you're building from scratch and design the whole house around it, but slapping one into an existing setup seems like a total gamble. Plus those repair costs are brutal, $1,200 for two breakdowns is almost a third of what you could've spent on a simpler system that'd be way easier to fix yourself. It's like the sellers hype up the "green" savings but conveniently forget to mention the maintenance headaches that eat it all back up.
