Pro tip: I used to think a 4-inch concrete slab was fine for a garage floor, but after seeing a friend's in Michigan crack after one winter, I went with 6 inches and fiber mesh on my own build.
Has anyone else had to change their mind on a basic spec like that because of a real world failure?

That "real world failure" part is key. It's one thing to read a spec, but seeing it actually break changes everything. Did your friend's slab have any rebar or wire mesh, or was it just plain concrete? I'm trying to figure out if the thickness was the only problem or if the reinforcement (or lack of it) played a bigger role.

No rebar, just a thin pour over bad dirt.

Ha, yeah I definitely learned that lesson the hard way too... thought I could cheap out on my shed slab and now I've got a nice little zigzag crack as a permanent reminder.
