Update: Bombed a brand pitch at VidCon because I read the room wrong
I was at a coffee meetup at VidCon in 2023 and pitched a snack brand on doing a 3 video deal, but I started with my subscriber count instead of their problem. The marketing lead said "we want creators who talk about our product first" and I watched her give the next slot to a guy with half my numbers. Now I lead every pitch with audience fit, and I want to know if any of you have lost a deal for the same reason.
Wait, she actually said "we want creators who talk about our product first" and then handed the slot to someone with half your numbers? That is wild to me. I get that brands care about fit, but brushing off a bigger audience just because you led with your sub count feels harsh. In my experience most of these marketing folks decide who they like in the first ten seconds, so the order you say things matters way more than it should. Your mileage may vary but that story would sting for a while.
