That $90 microphone stand I bought twice before learning the cheap one works better

Read somewhere that most podcasters end up using cheap gear anyway after they get tired of replacing the fancy stuff... something about the build quality not mattering when you're just talking into it. The expensive ones have all those moving parts that break, while the simple metal one just sits there doing its job. Honestly, the only time I see people stick with pricey stands is when they're doing heavy desk work like drum mics or something... for vocals, cheap is totally fine.

I read a thread last month where a sound engineer said the cheap shock mounts actually work better for podcasting because they don't have that heavy counterweight system that keeps drifting. He pointed out that most expensive stands are made for musicians who need to swing mics around, not for someone sitting still at a desk. So yeah, the simple metal ones just hold the mic in place and you're done, that's really all you need.
