Spent 8 hours on a thumbnail that tanked immediately

I spent all day last week making this super detailed thumbnail with custom graphics and everything. I got like 12 clicks from it. The next video I just used a screenshot of my face and a simple text overlay and it did way better. Has anyone else found that simpler thumbnails actually work better for their audience?

That "screenshot of my face and simple text" thing is exactly what changed my mind too. I used to think fancy thumbnails showed I cared about quality, but my best performing ones are just me looking surprised with one word on it. Sometimes less really is more when people are just scrolling past.

What's the deal with that though - why do simple thumbnails actually trick our brains better? I swear it's like we've been trained to ignore the super polished stuff because it looks like an ad, but a raw face makes us think "oh this is a real person sharing something real.

Drop testing your own thumbnails and see what happens. I kept overthinking mine until I just put a straight up unedited screenshot of my face with yellow text and it doubled my views overnight. Your brain literally treats a glazed over expression and simple words like a signal from another human, not an ad, so lean into that.
