My uncle, a retired TV editor, told me to never use more than three cuts in a 10-second clip, and my latest video's retention shot up by 15% after I finally listened.

I mean, I always thought his 'old school' rule was too rigid for my fast-paced gaming edits, but after my analytics tanked last month, I tried it on a new Apex Legends montage and viewers actually watched the whole thing.

Glad it worked for you, but that rule would kill my style. My best videos break it constantly with quick, rhythmic cuts that match the music and game action. Sometimes a fast sequence of shots builds way more energy than holding on one angle. I guess it depends on what feeling you're going for, because a strict limit feels like it would make everything look the same.

Yeah, the part about a strict limit making everything look the same is interesting. I read an interview with a music video director who said their only rule is "serve the feeling, not the formula." They said a frantic song might need ten cuts in three seconds, but a sad moment needs to breathe. So maybe the three-cut thing is a good starting point, not the finish line.

My buddy's wedding video had like two cuts in the vows, it felt so raw and real.
