My microphone died mid-stream last night and I lost it

I was 45 minutes into a live coding stream on Twitch, explaining a fix for a bug I'd spent 3 days on, when my Yeti Nano just cut out completely with no warning. I sat there staring at the dead blue light for a solid minute before I realized the stream was still running but silent. Anyone else have a piece of gear fail at the worst possible moment and just have to laugh or cry?

Grab a secondary mic and test it now before you need it. I've been through the exact same thing with a Blue Yeti that just gave up in the middle of a collab stream. What worked for me was switching to a simple dynamic mic through an audio interface, way more reliable and less prone to those random failures. Also set up a backup mic on a different input channel so if your main one dies you can just switch sources in OBS without missing a beat. Took me about an hour of panic and frustration to figure that out, but now I always have two mics ready to go even if I'm only using one.

Yetis are actually pretty reliable if you keep the gain low and manage background noise.
