I faked my whole "spontaneous" vlog style after a fan spotted my shot list at VidCon
Two years ago at VidCon I was walking the expo floor and this girl maybe 14 years old tugged my sleeve and said she loved my channel. She was sweet, but then she pointed at the folded paper sticking out of my back pocket and asked if that was my script. It was my shot list for the whole convention, every beat planned down to the reaction faces I make when I see a cool booth. I laughed it off and said it was just notes, but she gave me this look and said "so that's why it feels so real, because you practice it." I think about that kid every single time I film now. For the next six months I tried going fully raw with no list, no plan, no second take. My retention dropped almost 30 percent and my editing time doubled because I was sitting through so much junk footage. So here is my actual confession, I went back to the list. I just never let it show on camera anymore. Has anyone else had a viewer or reader call out the seams in their process like that, and did you change anything for real or just hide it better?
