Skipped every writing prompt for a year, then one dumb prompt got me going again
I used to think prompts were for people who couldn't come up with their own ideas. Then I hit a stretch last spring where I stared at a blank page for three hours and typed nothing. Out of desperation I tried a prompt about a vending machine that only dispensed memories. I wrote 400 words before I noticed the time. That led to a short story I actually finished, which is more than I can say for my own ideas in the past 14 months. So what's the trick, do you guys tweak the prompts or take them as is? I'm curious if anyone else found a random prompt working when their own ideas failed.
