Serious question: Grim vs. hopeful environmental prompts for sparking change

I recently led a creative writing group where we focused on sustainability themes. Some members argued that dark, end-of-the-world scenarios make the stakes real and push writers to confront harsh truths. Others felt that optimistic prompts about solved problems and green tech inspire more actionable ideas and avoid burnout. I see points on both sides and can't decide which approach works better for motivating people. What do you all think? Have you used either type of prompt in your writing?

Yeah, mix both to keep it real but not depressing.

Wait, mixing them how? Like adding a cute paint color to a room with bad plumbing? Saw a house once where they put up fancy wallpaper but the ceiling had a slow leak. You could see the water stain shaped like a ghost right through it. That's not keeping it real, that's just hiding a problem.

Consider how that ghost stain was actually a warning sign. The real problem wasn't the look, it was the rot growing unseen above the ceiling. Covering it just lets the damage get worse.
