Question about the worst writing day I ever had

Last Tuesday I sat down to write a short story and ended up deleting 2,000 words because nothing clicked. My character felt flat and the dialogue sounded like a robot. Has anyone else ever scrapped a whole day's work and started fresh?

Honestly Nathan, I always thought sticking with the original idea was the way to go, but you might be onto something with the name switch. @thompson.nathan That actually makes a lot more sense now that I think about it.

Did you ever try to salvage a scene by switching the character's name mid-way through? I did that once with a detective story, changed the main character from "Mark" to "Sarah" and the whole thing started working. I think we sometimes get too attached to the original idea even when it's not cooperating.

Yeah, I've done that. Swapping names or even just the gender can totally unlock a character because it changes how you think about their voice and choices without you realizing it.
