Pro tip: Old guy at a bus stop taught me more than any writing class

Waiting for the 72 bus in Portland last Tuesday, this older dude just starts reading my notebook over my shoulder. He says 'your characters sound like robots, make them screw up like real people.' Got me thinking how I always polish dialogue too much. Has anyone else had a random stranger give you better advice than a paid workshop?

Why would you trust advice from some random guy who couldn't even afford a car?

You couldnt even afford a car" is a pretty funny way to dismiss someone. Not having a car says more about where you live or your priorities than it does about being wrong about something. Maybe just judge the advice on its own instead of turning it into a personal attack.
