Just realized I spent three whole days trying to write a character who could smell lies

I had this cool idea for a detective who could literally smell when someone was lying, but I got stuck for 72 hours trying to figure out how that power would actually work without being silly. What's a writing problem that took you way longer to solve than you thought it would?

Just make the smell super specific, like ozone or metal.

Nah, ozone is too common now. It's in every "clean" scented candle. Gotta dig deeper.
