I was convinced my characters needed epic backstories until I read a 3-line prompt about a guy missing his bus
For months I was cramming paragraphs of childhood trauma and world history into every character intro. Then last week someone posted that prompt about a guy who just missed his bus and had to walk home. The responses were incredible. People built whole stories around a simple moment. Made me realize I was overcomplicating everything. Has anyone else found a tiny prompt that totally shifted how you write?

My buddy wrote a whole novel just from seeing a stranger drop their groceries in the rain.

Huh, that's an interesting take but I wonder if people are missing the real spark here. It's not about the groceries or the rain, it's about pattern recognition and how our brains fill in gaps. Your buddy saw a moment, but he probably already had a story floating around in his head waiting for a hook like that to latch onto. Most of us walk around with fragments of narratives we're not even conscious of, and one weird moment can snap them all into focus. It's like you don't invent the story out of thin air, you just finally see the thread you've been carrying around all along. That's the part that gets me thinking.
