I thought writing prompts were a crutch for lazy writers, then one random Tuesday changed my mind
Honestly, for about 4 years I rolled my eyes at prompt lists. I figured real writers just sit down and make stuff up, no training wheels needed. Then on a boring Tuesday in February I hit a wall on a short story and tried one prompt from a free site: 'write about a character who finds a letter addressed to them in their own handwriting.' I banged out 900 words in one sitting, way more than my usual 200 word slog. That whole week I used a new prompt every morning and finished 5 drafts, which is more than I did in the 3 months before. Tbh I think the prompt just gives my brain a starting line so it stops circling. What prompts actually got you unstuck, or do you still think they're a crutch?
