I finally got why people hate on detailed worldbuilding after a convo with a sci-fi writer at a coffee shop

She said tossing in 50 pages of lore just slows the story down like a sandbag on a kite, but is that really true or is it just her genre bias vs. fantasy's need for deep settings?

Oh man, I've been there. I tried cramming a whole history of my fantasy world into chapter two once and it was like watching paint dry. In my experience, the best way is to sprinkle that stuff in naturally as the story moves forward. Your mileage may vary, but I've seen writers drop a single line about a past war and it makes the world feel huge without stopping the action. Take this with a grain of salt, but a lot of readers just want to feel like the world has depth without having to wade through a textbook to get there.

Used to love lore dumps but yeah, they kill the pacing.
