Got stuck on a character name for a short story for three days

I had a full plot outline for a mystery set in a small town, but the main detective's name just felt wrong. I tried every generator online and went through my old yearbooks. My partner finally said, 'Just call him Frank and move on.' That simple fix took way longer than writing the first chapter. Has a small detail ever derailed your writing like that?

Totally get that. What was it about the original name that felt off for your detective? Was it the sound, or did it just not match the character's personality you had in mind?

Yeah, @shane655, it's wild how a name can just feel wrong. I read this blog post once where a writer said her detective's original name sounded too "soft" for a gritty noir story, like a "Timothy" when he needed to be a "Vince." It wasn't just the sound, but the whole vibe it gave off didn't fit the character's rough past.

That "Timothy" vs "Vince" example is spot on. I had a side character who was a tired, old mechanic. I called him "Liam" at first and it just felt too clean, like a guy in an ad. Switched it to "Hank" and suddenly I could picture the grease under his nails. The name just unlocked his whole worn-out look.
