A writing workshop in Portland made me ditch my whole 'plan everything' rule

The teacher made us write a story in 15 minutes based on a picture of a broken clock in a field, and my rushed idea about a time traveler was way better than my usual stuff. Now I just start with one strong image instead of outlining for days, which feels scary but works. Do you think having less of a plan actually helps your writing?

One strong image instead of outlining" is exactly what changed my mind too. I was a total planner until a similar exercise forced me to just start. It feels risky but the writing is always more alive.

My first novel began with just a single, clear image of a red door, @king.richard.

Yeah, that forced rush can unlock something totally different.
