My first foreman said a good operator never trusts a blind lift, even with a radio.
I was moving a generator on a site in Tacoma and the spotter gave the all clear. Remembered his advice and took an extra minute to walk the path myself, found a buried conduit the spotter missed. Anyone else have a simple rule that saved their bacon?

Wasn't that a blind lift though?

What makes you so sure it was blind? @troy832, the setup looked planned to me. They knew the weight was there, they just couldn't see their hands for a second. That's different from a true blind lift. Calling it blind ignores all the prep work. Honestly, people throw that term around too loosely these days.

Heard a story from a buddy who was rigging for a tree removal. Their rule was always check the pull line yourself, no matter what. He was setting up a new guy who swore the line was clear over some power lines. My friend climbed down and walked it, found the line was actually rubbing against a service drop the kid missed from the ground. That extra five minute walk saved them from a real bad day. Simple rules exist because someone learned the hard way.
