Dropped $600 on a laser level that saved my back

Bought a fancy rotary laser level after my third time climbing up and down a ladder to check plumb on a 5-story job site. Ever since I started using it I haven't had a single re-do on a pick alignment. Has anyone else found a tool that seemed expensive but actually paid for itself fast?

That thing about the laser level saving your back really hit home. I read somewhere that pros who switch to rotary lasers cut their layout time by like 40% on multi-story work, which probably explains why you're not redoing pick alignments. I remember a buddy of mine got a rotary after fighting with a string line on a tall wall, said the first job paid for half of it just in saved ladder trips (and ibuprofen). Sounds like you found the one tool that makes you wonder why you waited so long to buy it.

...my buddy Dave bought a fancy laser transit last year for his framing crew and the thing paid for itself by the second week. He used to spend half the day just running string lines and checking with a level, now he walks around the site like he owns the place with that thing on a tripod. First time he used it on a foundation layout he said it saved him from having to re-dig two footings because the corners were actually square for once.
