Appreciation post: the spotter who wouldn't stop staring at my outrigger pads
Ran a 60 ton in Wichita last month and a retired operator walked by, looked at my pads on the asphalt for maybe 10 seconds, and said "you're on a storm drain, son." Sure enough there was a grate right under the front left pad and I never would've caught it from the cab. How often do you guys walk the ground yourself before you set up, or do you trust the GC to flag that stuff?
Wait, you set up right on top of a storm drain and didn't know? That's terrifying, a grate could collapse or shift under that much weight and you'd never feel it from the seat. I mean yeah the GC should flag that stuff but honestly you gotta walk it yourself every single time, nobody cares about your rig like you do. That retired guy probably saved you from a real bad day and he knew it just from a glance. How did the GC react when you told them, did they own up to missing it?
